Being Flexible - Stopping my Robotics PI Planets

One component of my industry side was 10 PI factory planets, nothing was extracted just 40,000 m3 of Mechanical Parts/Consumer Electronics was transferred down to each planet(Divided up into the 4 launch pads per planet). From there 3 factories churned away for 4 days until I picked up approximately 45,000 robotics and sold via Jita. The whole system was click intensive to pick up, but once it was running the only challenge was dividing up the stacks of goods into each launch pad.

Then the patch hit, and robotics started falling. This was expected due to the changes in PI goods use so i've been careful to monitor my costs and margin and as my last cycle was completing I noticed that it is no longer profitable to produce Robotics(in highsec). Once you factor in taxes you would lose 2300 isk per unit before your taxes/brokerage fees even kick in.

Robotics, loved it while it lasted.

With the volume of Robotics still consumer I'm expecting prices to adjust over time so that there will be profit in highsec factory planets. We'll see how long until I get the ambition to go click crazy and switch them over though.

Terrible last minute speculation

I'll admit to being a terrible patch speculator, I returned to Eve only as the details were coming out for the most recent round of changes so not really having the time to dig into patch notes I figured the bulk of speculative opportunities were already being exploited. A fault assumption I realize now once I broke out the old eve spreadsheet and calculated the new cost of formerly T1 battleships. A Domi is currently settling for 120m and has a build cost of roughly 210m.

Alright, i'll cave...I've got the isk to follow a medium term investment and dont have the time for active trading. Just short of 10 billion isk dropped on 80 battleships later...

From an overall diversification perspective, this makes up about a third of my active funds at the moment while still leaving me with 15-17 billion in market sell orders and 2-2.5 billion tied up in PI/Production.

So EVE is down, what else to do?

Kerbal Space Program, that is all

Tools of the trade

Slowly discovering tools to assist in my trading and found out about jEveAssets from a blog named Merchant Monarchy (http://merchantmonarchy.blogspot.ca/). Its exactly the broad overview type asset calculator I was looking for, I'm still keeping an eye out for something that will keep track of profit/item reliable through purchasing over multiple accounts but considering my trading style at the moment has a relatively reliable margin I'm not overly stressed for now.

With my work keeping me busy I've set myself up trading goods that have a lower volume, lower margin, but I can be sure that they will sell eventually at my current prices. A 5% margin may be nothing to boast about but when reading other market bloggers but when its on 10-15 billion of revenue its at least keeping my 2 accounts in PLEX while I'm busy outside of Eve.

I've also setup a series of PI factory planets that can run for 5 days without intervention and turn about a 10-15% ROI each week, a stupid amount of clicking to get 10 planets setup but now it should just be pickup and drop off in a freighter. I've got a third PI character that can run 6 planets but I'll probably take a PI click-fest break for a couple of days and have the third character ready to jump in for the next resupply round.

Nothing amazingly profitable but all together brings in enough to keep me going and get back into the swing of things. Reading up on the upcoming expansion and realizing i'm way to far out of the loop at the moment to understand all the changes and how they will impact the market. Overall though, i'm avoiding anything ice or tech 2 related at the moment.

Calculating My Net Worth

Spending some time tonight messing about with PI in highsec. Its also my first time with PI since they established the build your own Customs Office, so the highsec taxes are definitely a kicker. There is still decent profit in it though, and wondering if I should bother to look at lowsec or npc 0.0 for an operation. I very much suspect that any Customs Office I setup on my own would get knocked down pretty quick though.

The messing about with an isk source got me thinking about the various ways I've made isk over the years, and I've tried quite a few ways...some successfully, others not. In total, my net worth is somewhere around 30-34 billion isk. Of that its about 5 billion worth of ships(3x freighters on various characters and a Thanatos+Raven Navy Issue I've decided to keep), 12 billion worth of trading capital on a Jita 4-4 station trader, and roughly 16 billion worth of speculative goods that I picked up in the past I'm slowly unloading. At the moment I have 2 active accounts fueled by PLEX and a third inactive(Cyno alts with manufacturing/science skills mostly). Suppose when it comes down to net worth in Eve its all pretty relative, to someone new I may be space rich but to others i'm just on par(or far behind!)

I mention my net worth simply as a way of marking down where I am today and allowing me to write over the next few posts how I've made isk over the years during my on/off time in Eve.

Cheers,

-Hamno

Tuesday, 14 May 2013

Well, another EVE Online blog, this one is mostly just a spot to write down my own ideas and commentary on the game and how I choose to play it. I've been an on/off player since 2004 and have recently returned from a 2 year break. I last quit the game for a combination of 2 reasons, a big old dose of the "Bitter Old Vet" who got tired of time sucking 0.0 campaigns and with 1 small daughter and a second one on the way I just didnt have the time.

Now that my my daughters are now 3 and 1, my career is busy as hell but I've started to appreciate the need to zone out every so often and spend an hour or so a night taking a break. I played various games I grabbed on sale via Steam but after awhile they all seemed the same, random RPGs following a pretty scripted plot with predictable twists. To be honest I'm really not sure what caused me to log into the account management page and hit the button to activate my account for 4 hours so I could resub with a PLEX but here I am.

I still really dont have the time for any great 0.0 alliance battles, but given an hour or so a night if I choose I'm sure I can still find my own place in Eve.
